Week 1 - Overwhelmed!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013
Tuesdays are my prep day so hopefully you will hear from me every Tuesday! This Tuesday was awesome! I just got back from doing a session in the Mexico City Temple! It was in Spanish and so confusing but so beautiful all at once. The ride to the temple takes about an hour and there are some insane drivers in Mexico, including the ones that work for the church. Haha. I thought many times throughout the drive that we were all going to die! The Elders thought it was cool. Naturally right? Anyway, it is gorgeous here and it rains like crazy. This is their hot season and it really doesn't get above seventy. It is super nice. When I got here, I was assigned to Hermana Marsh, but the next day in class we found out that she speaks Spanish way too well to be in a beginner class. So she was moved to an intermediate district and two other Hermanas had to move to mine. So I am in a trio. Mi companeras es Hermana Mills y Hermana Urie. Haha. Hope you can understand the Spanish. That sentence is pretty simple. Anyway, Hermana Urie is the one that was in line right behind us at the airport. She wore the blue and white striped dress? They are awesome and they understand Spanish so well! I wish that I could go on the way they do. The second day after we arrived we had to teach our first lesson . . . IN SPANISH! ahhhhhhh! I had no clue what was going on the whole time! We are now on lesson four with our investigator and I still have to write everything that I want to say down because if not, I can't\don't know how to say anything! Ummm, I don't know who thought it was a good idea to go on a spanish speaking mission, but they were crazy. I am really trying, but I am by far the worst in my class. I really wish I had taken even one little mini class to get basic vocabulary down. My one consolation is that my teacher says that I have an authentic accent, and that I sound like a native! YES!

The MTC (we call it the CCM in spanish) is huge, 90 acres. We are the seventh group to go through. It is just getting up and running, but is used to be a school so there are dorms and lots of classrooms as well as a store, clinic, and lots of little houses! I live in one of the houses. Casa is home in spanish, so we usually refer to it as 'mi casa'. Anyway mi casa can fit 18 girls, but we only have about 13 in there now. For the most part, the hermanas live in the houses and the elders live in the dorms. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we all also have a laundry room. Our casa is absolutely full of las cucarachas, or cockroaches in english. Yes, it is gross! I am the most brave hermana there though. I am the cockroach smasher. The other girls just scream. Sissies! Anyway, I am in district 12. There is irony in that if you think about it. When we volunteer to pray we say, 'I volunteer as tribute!' haha it's all in good fun. (She is referring to the Hunger Games movie in case you didn't catch on.) There are eleven in my district. There is a Horrocks kid from Neola and another boy from Heber, and craziest of all, there is a boy from Village on the Parkway in my district too. He was one of Ryan Chandler's roommates. You asked if there is a time difference and yes there is. We are an hour later I think.
As for home, I hope that you are all having a blast and that the kids all like school. I'm sad about Tasha, I hope Mac finds her. He falls asleep with her so I know he must like her! GROSS. I am so excited to see Dennver (Knight) and Ashley (Herrera)! Everyone here knows a ton of people, but me . . . . I know no one!
Tell anyone coming to the Mexico MTC to bring a hoodie, a raincoat, stomping shoes (for the big bugs), lots and lots of chocolate (I am not joking, I'm dying), mustard, salt, pepper, and ranch. I know there is a ton more, important stuff, but I can't remember at the moment. OH, SUNDAYS here are the best! They do most of it in English! I LOVE ENGLISH! Anyway, I have to write DaNelle, so you can ask her for more! LOVE you tons! and miss you more! Talk to you next week.

Also from her email to DaNelle:
About the food...it is interesting and definitely not Mexican! It is just kind of whatever thrown in and served. Haha. There is tons and tons of bread though and it is delicious! But, oh I could really use some salt and pepper, the food is so bland! I only have an hour of email time, but keep sending me emails though! The longer the better! Anyway, the MTC is so pretty and I am actually really grateful for the ten foot fence all the way around us. The outside world is soo noisy! We hear tons of car horns, fireworks every other night, gunshots four or five times a day and police sirens that never stop! They go all night! But I sleep like a rock. I have never been kept so busy for all hours of the day like this before, we do not stop!
Oh, funny story! Our first night here they let us walk around and explore. Some of the MTC staff and presidency live here so there are homes and playgrounds. My companions and I decided that we wanted to go down the slide just once. I definitely wasn't going to let those girls beat me, so I ran to the slide and went down. But it was dark and I didn't see the huge pile of mud and rust at the bottom of the slide... I no longer have a light floral colored dress or white garments..they are permanently brown! Oh, and I was trying to tell my teacher that I knew we were children of our Heavenly Father.... I actually told him that we were farm animals of our Heavenly Father...awkward! Haha. Oh, and the saddest of all...there is no Spanish word for awkward! The last girl that tried to say it in a sentence actually ended up saying that the branch president got her pregnant! That was a fun one to explain! Haha. Anyway, we got to go to the temple today in Mexico City. It is huge. I am used to the Vernal or even the Timpanogus Temple, but compared to this temple they are small!
Love Hermana Thacker
